Why visit

Why Visit the Slovenian Alps?

The Slovenian Alps combine dramatic mountain scenery with lakes, valleys, hiking routes and traditional Alpine culture in a remarkably compact area.

The Julian Alps are home to Mount Triglav and much of Triglav National Park, while the Kamnik-Savinja Alps offer another impressive landscape of peaks, valleys and mountain plateaus. Together they make Slovenia an excellent destination for travellers who enjoy nature and active days outdoors.

Weather and mountain conditions can change quickly. Always check current conditions and choose routes that suit your experience and fitness.

Julian Alps

Mount Triglav and the Heart of the Julian Alps

At 2,864 metres, Mount Triglav is Slovenia's highest mountain and the most recognisable symbol of the country's Alpine landscape. The surrounding Julian Alps offer impressive viewpoints, deep valleys, forests and high-mountain terrain.

You do not need to climb Triglav to enjoy the region. Many lower viewpoints and day hikes provide memorable views of the mountain and surrounding peaks.

Triglavski Dom na Kredarici

Mountain huts are an important part of hiking culture in the Slovenian Alps, and Kredarica is one of the best-known high-mountain locations below Triglav.

Triglavski dom na Kredarici stands high beneath the summit of Triglav and is closely associated with routes toward Slovenia's highest mountain. Reaching high-altitude huts requires proper footwear, suitable equipment and careful attention to weather conditions.

Hiking Trails in Triglav National Park

Hiking is one of the best ways to experience the Slovenian Alps. Trails range from gentle valley walks to demanding high-mountain routes, so it is important to choose a route that matches your ability.

Stay on marked trails, carry enough water, use suitable footwear and check the weather forecast before setting out. In the mountains, conditions can change much faster than they do in the valleys.

Mountain Huts Beneath Triglav

Dom Planika is another well-known high-mountain hut beneath Triglav. Huts such as Planika and Kredarica are part of Slovenia's long mountaineering tradition and provide an unforgettable sense of the high Alpine environment.

A visit to the higher huts is very different from a casual sightseeing stop. Routes can be long and demanding, and travellers should plan them as proper mountain excursions.

Triglav Lakes Valley

The Triglav Lakes Valley is one of the classic landscapes of the Julian Alps, combining mountain trails, high Alpine scenery and a chain of glacial lakes.

The valley is especially attractive to hikers who want to experience more than a single viewpoint. Mountain huts and marked trails make it possible to explore the area as part of a longer day hike or multi-day mountain trip.
